Withdrawal

Withdrawal is the part of recovery where the differences between substances matter most. Nicotine withdrawal is miserable and safe. Alcohol and benzodiazepine withdrawal can be medically dangerous and, in some cases, life-threatening — seizures and delirium tremens are real risks for heavy, long-term drinkers stopping abruptly.

If you have been drinking heavily every day, or have been on benzodiazepines for an extended period, talk to a clinician before you stop. Detox is sometimes something to do under supervision rather than alone. In an emergency in the US, call 911, or the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline if you are in crisis.

With that said, the guides below set out what is known about timelines and symptoms for each substance, drawn from public-health sources. They are educational, they describe populations rather than individuals, and they cannot tell you whether your own withdrawal is safe.
